The Perenjori Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was commissioned in mid 2018 as a trial to reduce power outages. The 1 MW/h system has been used over 300 times to support power reliability and quality.

More than 26 hours of outages have been avoided. 110 local mobiles receive text notifications regarding when BESS is operational. Depending on usage the system supports the grid up to around 6 hours at a time. With the text notifications residents can then plan for other power sources if the power outage is longer than what BESS can supply.

The two-year trial has finished but BESS will remain in place as a permanent fixture. The insights from the two-year trial will be applied to the network to see if other remote areas can benefit from a microgrid solution.
